Indigenous Peoples Day is first celebrated in Boston.

October 11, 2021

Acting Mayor Kim Janey created the new holiday by an executive order October 6, 2021, which declared, “Observing Indigenous People’s Day is about replacing the colonial myths passed down from generation to generation with the true history of the land upon which our nation was founded.” The holiday replaces what had been Columbus Day, upsetting members of the city’s Italian-American community.
